Carcinoid Heart Disease
Definition
Results from a metastasising carcinoid tumor, usually located in the appendix or ileum. The carcinoid tumor secretes a substance known as serotonin; if the tumor metastases to the liver, the serotonin may be deposited on the endocardial linings of the right heart. The serotonin is inactivated by the lungs.
